Snowbiker triggered. Avalanche Science staff compiled the report. 34-37* slope angle.
Two snow bikers in familiar terrain rolled over top of slope intent to ride down meadow and across ravine; slab fractured beneath lead rider who out-ran debris; secondary slab entrained tail rider with partial burial at ravine.
Tail rider deployed air bag in personal pack after slab fractured, then engaged helmet mic after partial burial in ravine below slope and against a pine tree. Was able to communicate with lead rider and partially clear area around helmet and face with free arm. Lead rider used snow bike and beacon to locate buried riderand dig out from debris. Then both riders used GPS device to locate the tail rider’s completely buried snow bike and excavate. Both riders then rode snow bikes back to highway (a distance of approximately 6 miles).
