Citizen Science at the Stanley Library: Snow, Avalanches, and Human Decision Making

January 12 @ 5:30 pm - 6:30 pm

Chris Lundy is a Stanley-based avalanche forecaster with the USFS Sawtooth Avalanche Center. He’s been in the avalanche industry since 1996, working stints as a researcher, ski patrol, guide, and educator. Along the way, he’s learned a lot about snow and avalanches, but more importantly, he’s learned what he doesn’t know. One of the most baffling questions of all is why people put themselves at risk of avalanches, even when they know conditions are dangerous. That line of inquiry takes you down the road of human psychology and decision-making, and it turns out humans are much more complicated than snow.
