Start Date: 12.14.18 Name: VandenBos Operation: SAC
Drainage/Route:  Baker Creek Observed Terrain:  all aspects to 9,800' Zone/Region:  Smoky & Boulder Mountains
WEATHER OBSERVATIONS
HN24: HST: 15cm Sky: Precip: Temps:
 Ridgeline Wind: Moderate and Intermittent
Blowing Snow: Snow Available for Transport: Small amounts
AVALANCHE OBSERVATIONS
None Reported
 Comments: Noted a few
SNOWPACK OBSERVATIONS
 HS: 50-60cm
Upper Pack: 15 cm PP with a dusting of 2-4mm SH on top
Middle Pack: 30 cm FC, generally less faceted with depth. This post-Thanksgiving snow seems a bit more intact that what I've been seeing in the pass and on Galena Peak, but it has had a few days to sit with a load on it, which may explain that in part.
Lower Pack: 10 cm DH, starting to round ever so slightly?

Problem 2 Comments: 12/12 interface. More of an issue where Wednesday's snow was drifted into thicker wind slabs.
STABILITY TESTS
Stability Test Results: Variable test scores from two pits. ECTNs in the single digits to low-teens on 12/12 interface. ECTNs in the mid-teens to low twenties on 11/22 DH
OBVIOUS SIGNS OF INSTABILITY
 Marked with checkmark if observed:
 Cracking (isolated)
 Collapsing (isolated)

Snow Stability Rating for your observed area: Fair Confidence: Trend:
BOTTOM LINE
Comments: Considerably less collapsing and cracking than I've experienced recently in other areas. That said, its hard to get excited about "only" getting a handful of collapses. Not entirely sure that the snowpack is vastly different here, it may have just had a bit of time to adjust to the new load. Still traveling with wide margins.
