 Comments: 3cm HST at highway, 8cm at 10,000'. A two hour window of S1 in the early afternoon brought another 2cm. Wind speed picked up dramatically in the afternoon - blowing upper end of moderate to low end of strong and fairly steady out of the NW. Boulders got about an hour of partial sun in the late afternoon but Smokys remained shrouded by low clouds, looked like it was snowing on that side of the highway for a good portion of the afternoon.
AVALANCHE OBSERVATIONS
None Reported
 Comments: 1 new WL pile (from the previous day) on the shoulder of Easley and another similar pile on the ridge between Easley and Lorenzo. Both approaching D2. I intentionally triggered several very small, fresh wind slabs on cross-loaded features in middle elevation terrain on Lightning.
SNOWPACK OBSERVATIONS
 HS:  
 Upper Pack: Cold(er) overnight temps allowed the snow surface to freeze (5cm thick) but it remained unconsolidated below this. Shaded low elevation terrain is approaching "isothermal" (I'm sure that temps vary through the pack, but you get the picture, an unconsolidated pile of mush). Easy pole probes to the ground. Even on shaded aspects at 9,000' where the snowpack is shallow it is possible to push your pole to the ground, but it does require some effort. On solar aspects the upper pack is unconsolidated glop down to the top of the February storms (3/4?). At low elevations its possible to push through this into more unconsolidated snow but as you gain elevation this interface remains strong and resistant to probing.

  Primary Concern Comments: Isolated slabs were small but touchy in middle and upper elevation terrain. This was a manageable problem and was primarily a concern due to the nature of the terrain that I was traveling in. I elected not to travel through some terrain because of these slabs.

  Problem 2 Comments: Started to be a concern as the sun came out later in the day. As with the wind slabs, this was largely a problem due to the nature of the terrain that I was in.
