Signs of Unstable Snow

Did you see shooting cracks?
No
Did you experience collapsing or whumpfing?
Yes, Widespread

Observations

We toured up Blackman peak sticking to low angle terrain on the way up and down. We traveled on South and Southwest aspects and experienced widespread collapsing on the skin up. Snow on Southerly aspects was drastically warmer than snow on Southwesterly aspects, which was slightly consolidated but wintry. We dug a pit at 9,946ft on a SW facing slope. HS was 81cm, slope angle 26 degrees. We observed 3 thin MFcr's with fairly large facets between the bottom 2. We performed a few stability tests which didn't produce as significant results as I would have expected. However, it was clear that the snowpack structure was poor.

Advanced Observations

Observed Avalanche Problem #1:
Persistent Slab
Comments:
We did not observe any natural avalanches, but we stuck to low angle terrain and the consistent collapsing was enough to let us know the snowpack was fragile.
