Thin snow out in the Pioneers near the yurt. We skied a variety of areas in this zone over the weekend, and experienced a number of collapses and cracking. Dug a pit 1/3 @ 9500ft on a N facing, 33deg slope (Peanuts). Stability tests were mixed with failures on a large weak layer about halfway through the ~80cm snowpack. Pretty thick slab on top of really rotten snow up there. We traveled very conservatively, and found plenty of rocks with our skis :(
Observed Avalanche Problem #1:
All aspects carrying enough snow, collapses and cracking easily triggered but not too scary of a size in most spots because of thin snow (obviously will change after this week's storm) but still avoided any avalanche terrain and kept it conservative. Weak layer exists midway through snowpack, ~30cm from top. Will be nasty after more snow loading the steeper stuff in here.
