Signs of Unstable Snow

Observations

No signs of recent avalanche activity in the area.

Dug a pit at 8500' on a N,NW aspect of ridge, slightly wind affected. Time: 2 pm; temp: 31; slope: 31; wind: <7 mph W. Total snow depth: 237 cm; ECTN 24. Fractured 26 cm down on a Melt Form layer but not a clean fracture, no propagation. Photo shows test column after pulling off remaining snow with significant effort. We did notice a large cornice near the rocks that overlook the Monkey Face but we felt confident given the conditions, the SAC forecast, and our ECT results that we would not trigger a cornice fall or an avalanche.
