We were up doing beacon practice so we dug a lot of holes in the snow to place beacons. All places we dug had a dusting of fresh snow on top. Some of the snow was consolidated from the ground to just below that surface dusting. In other places, it went (from top to bottom) dusting, consolidated layer that felt crusty (a few inches thick) and then sugary snow at the bottom. The snow we were on was spotty and variable. Some places the snow was a foot thick right next to a sage brush that was mostly uncovered. The majority of the solar aspects at that elevation were melted out completely.
