Afternoon monoski between morning and evening storms. Skies were mostly cloudy and winds were light when I was in the field.
This was an afternoon monoski mission. The warm temperatures and morning rain had weakened/melted many of the bonds in the snowpack, and boot penetration was frequently to the ground as I ascended. I followed some avalanche debris which helped. The snowpack in this area has established a good plumbing system, and despite the late hour temps and morning rain the snow wasn't holding much liquid water near the surface. Monoski pen was 6-10 cm on the descent and consistently supportable, though I suspect I would have been trapdoor-ing with skis.
One big leg all day.
Avalanche problems were limited to wet snow problems in the area I traveled.
